Liberty View
Limited print run. The reverse of each print is stamped for authenticity and signed and numbered by the photographer.
Photographer’s Note: As a child, my family went to Ellis Island and Liberty State Park frequently. We would fly kites or run around in the grass with the Statue of Liberty and New York City in the background, but what I loved most was looking through the old-fashioned tourist binoculars. I always feel a pang of sentimentality when I happen upon one.
I took this photograph from Ellis Island after taking a behind the scenes hardhat tour of the old ho which included an incredible installation by JR. I was rushing to catch the ferry back to the city and only pause for a split second to take this picture. This image reminds me of my childhood. I’ve intentionally allowed for the sky and sunset colors to be grainy so that it lends a sense of agedness to the view. While there might not have been binoculars on Ellis Island when even the most recent immigrants flowed through its halls, I like to think that many a person felt the magic of hope watching a sunset behind Lady Liberty.
